COUNTY RECEIVES Probation
STATE AWARD TO in the
EXPAND PRETRIAL News
PROGRAM
On Friday August 12th, the Judicial Council of California awarded approximately $1.6 million to the Santa
Barbara County Superior Court to operate a Pretrial Pilot Program through June 30, 2021. Partnering with the
Santa Barbara County Probation Department, the award will expand the county's current Pretrial Program,
which includes conducting assessments and monitoring those released into the community while pending
court proceedings. The project aims to increase the safe and efficient release of individuals before trial, use of
the least restrictive monitoring practices, protect public safety and ensure court appearances, and expand the
use of risk assessment tools.
Presiding Judge Michael Carrozzo commented, "The Santa Barbara Superior Court is pleased to have been
selected to receive this award. This will greatly enhance our ability to assess and identify those individuals
that may be appropriate for pretrial release while continuing to preserve the safety of our community. We are
also pleased to partner with the Probation Department, as they are not only experienced in the
implementation of evidence-based practices and interventions, but are uniquely positioned to administer both
the initial assessment and provide community supervision."
The Judicial Council of California awarded funding to Alameda, Calaveras, Kings, Los Angeles, Modoc, Napa,
Nevada-Sierra, Sacramento, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Sonoma, Tulare, Tuolumne, Ventura, and
Yuba County Superior Courts.
COPS ON THE ROOFTOP
On September 12th, the Santa Barbara County Probation
Department along with other law enforcement agencies
volunteered to raise money and awareness for the Special
Olympics at the Dunkin' Donuts on Broadway in Santa Maria.
Volunteers provided free coffee coupons to patrons who
made a donation, and all proceeds supported local Special
Olympians from the Santa Maria region. Deputy Probation
Officers Nancy Veliz and Bonnie O'Neill, Supervising
Probation Officer Amber Flores, participated along with
Santa Maria Police Department personnel and Park Rangers.
This event is just one of several that occur during the year to
support the Special Olympians.
